For all of you outdoor enthusiasts, the Triangle area boasts an extensive Greenway Trail System. The City of Raleigh has the Capital Area Greenway System which consists of over 100 miles of trails. Twenty-eight individual trails make up the system and a major goal is to connect the various trails into a continuous network. Detailed information about the trail system can be found here: Capital Area Trail System, including a map and smartphone app which provides an interactive map, distance tracking and other features.
A favorite Greenway for local cycling groups is the Crabtree Creek Trail which with some short hops on roadways can be crafted into a 12 mile or so scenic loop which will allow you to see hidden parts of Raleigh that you wouldn’t otherwise get to experience.
A favorite of Greenway cycling groups is the Crabtree Creek Trail which with some short hops on roadways can be crafted into a 12 mile or so scenic loop which will allow you to see hidden parts of Raleigh that you wouldn’t otherwise get to experience.  Of course, with a little planning, there are opportunities along the way to stop for refreshments.
The Town of Cary Greenway System consists of over 70 miles of trails including the Reedy Creek Trail that runs through the 5,600 acre Umstead State Park and links up with the Capital Area Greenway System.  Most of these trails connect with area parks and you can craft plenty of options for your outdoor activities.
A favorite outing of mine is to take my bike to North Cary Park located at Norwell Boulevard and ride the Black Creek Greenway a short distance to the Crabtree Lake shelter, hang out on the deck and enjoy the water views.  From there, I proceed on to the Reedy Creek Trail that continues into Umstead Park. Once inside Umstead Park, there are over 12 miles of bike and bridle trail that can be very demanding. In addition, there are miles of hiking only trails. Umstead Park has so much to offer, a blog post has little chance of doing justice to all that’s available.
The above barely scratches the surface of the Greenway options available in the triangle. Below are some links to get you started on learning about the awesome Greenway trail systems in the area.
